The Prayer of Protection
Dwelling in the Secret Place – A Reflection on Psalm 91
There are moments in life when we become deeply aware of how fragile things really are.
- A sudden illness.
- A financial crisis.
- A loved one traveling far from home.
- A storm we cannot control.
In those moments, believers throughout history have turned to one particular passage of Scripture: Psalm 91. It has often been called The Soldier’s Psalm, because men and women facing the dangers of war have prayed it for generations. But the battlefield is not the only place we need protection.
- We need protection in our homes.
- In our minds.
- In our bodies.
- In our families.
- In our daily lives.
Psalm 91 is not merely poetry. It is something far more powerful. It is a prayer conversation between earth and heaven. When we read it closely, we discover something remarkable: three voices are speaking.
The believer declares trust in God.
Heaven responds with promises of protection.
And finally, God Himself answers the prayer.
When we pray Psalm 91, we are not simply reading Scripture. We are stepping into that conversation.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Today I come to You seeking Your covering and protection.
You are my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.
Place me beneath the shadow of Your wings.
Guard my mind, my body, and my soul.
Protect my home, my loved ones, and all that You have entrusted to my care.
Let Your angels watch over my steps today.
And remind me, Lord, that no matter what storms rise around me,
I dwell in the secret place of the Most High.
Amen.

Devotional Reading
Psalm 91 begins with one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” The key word is dwelleth. This psalm is not about visiting God occasionally. It is about living in His presence. The believer then speaks:
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
Notice the phrase “I will say.” Faith is not only something we believe silently. Sometimes faith must be spoken aloud. The believer declares trust in God.
Then the voice shifts. The psalm begins describing divine protection:
- Deliverance from hidden traps
- Protection from disease and destruction
- Angels guarding our steps
“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
Here the voice sounds like heaven speaking back to the believer. But the most powerful moment comes at the end of the psalm, when the voice changes again.
Now God Himself speaks:
“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him…
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him.”
What began as a human prayer ends with a divine promise.
Why Psalm 91 Works as a Prayer
The Three Voices of Faith
One reason Psalm 91 has become such a powerful prayer for believers is because it reads like a conversation between earth and heaven. When we look closely at the psalm, we can hear three different voices speaking.
1. The Voice of the Believer
The prayer begins with a declaration of faith:
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” — Psalm 91:2
This is the voice of the believer speaking directly to God.
Throughout Scripture, faith is often expressed through spoken confession. The people of God declare who God is and what they trust Him to do. The Bible teaches that faith is not only something we believe quietly in our hearts—it is something we speak with our mouths.
“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” — Romans 10:10
When we pray Psalm 91, we are doing exactly what the psalm instructs:
“I will say of the Lord…”
2. The Voice of Heaven
As the psalm continues, the tone shifts. Now the words sound like heaven responding to the believer’s faith:
“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler…”
“A thousand shall fall at thy side… but it shall not come near thee.”
“For he shall give his angels charge over thee.”
These verses remind us that when a believer places their trust in God, heaven is not silent. Scripture tells us that God sends His angels to minister to His people:
“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” — Hebrews 1:14
The psalm reveals that God's protection often works through His unseen servants, guarding and guiding His people in ways we may never fully see in this life.
3. The Voice of God Himself
Then something remarkable happens near the end of the psalm. The voice changes again. Now God Himself speaks:
“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him…
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him.” — Psalm 91:14-15
What began as the believer’s prayer becomes God’s personal promise. The one who declared trust now hears the Lord respond with assurance:
- “I will deliver him.”
- “I will be with him in trouble.”
- “With long life will I satisfy him.”
This pattern—faith spoken, heaven responding, and God confirming His promise—is one reason Psalm 91 has become one of the most beloved prayers in all of Scripture.
The Power of Speaking God’s Promises
When believers pray Psalm 91 aloud, they are doing something deeply biblical. They are speaking God’s promises back to Him in faith. Scripture repeatedly shows that confession of faith matters.
David declared:
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” — Psalm 27:1
And the writer of Hebrews urges believers to:
“Hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” — Hebrews 10:23
When we pray Psalm 91, we are doing exactly that holding fast to the promises of God. We speak faith. Heaven responds. And God confirms His covenant to protect those who trust Him.
Modern Testimony
The Soldier’s Psalm
During World War I and World War II, many soldiers carried small Bibles or printed cards containing Psalm 91. One account tells of a group of soldiers who made it a daily habit to pray the psalm together before heading into dangerous missions. After several brutal engagements, they began noticing something remarkable: although they often found themselves in the fiercest fighting, their unit repeatedly survived situations that should have taken their lives.
One of the soldiers later said:
“We believed God had placed His angels around us because we prayed that psalm every day.”
Stories like this have circulated through military chaplaincies for decades.
Another Testimony
A missionary traveling through a dangerous region once shared a similar testimony. One night he sensed a strong urge to pray Psalm 91 before going to sleep. He prayed every verse slowly and deliberately.
The next morning local believers told him that armed men had been seen moving through the village during the night. But strangely, none had entered the home where he stayed. Later, one villager told him:
“We thought it was strange. It looked like soldiers were guarding your house.”
The missionary quietly smiled. He remembered the words he had prayed the night before:
“He shall give his angels charge over thee.”
A Charge / Reflection
Psalm 91 invites us into a powerful spiritual discipline.
Not just reading Scripture.
Praying Scripture.
Each day, after praying the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6, many believers also speak Psalm 91 aloud as a prayer of protection. They pray it over:
- their families
- their health
- their work
- their finances
- their future
It becomes a daily reminder that our lives are not governed by fear. They are held in the hands of God. And when we pray the final verses of Psalm 91, we hear something beautiful:
God Himself answering the prayer.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for being my refuge and my fortress.
When the world feels uncertain, remind me that I dwell in the secret place of the Most High.
Let Your angels guard my steps.
Protect my mind from fear and my heart from worry.
Watch over my family and all those I love.
Teach me to walk each day in faith, trusting not in my strength, but in Your promises.
And when trouble comes, help me remember Your words:
“I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him.”
With long life satisfy me, Lord,
and show me Your salvation.
Amen.
Make it Personal
Praying Psalm 91 Over My Life
Heavenly Father,
Today I choose to dwell in the secret place of the Most High, and I rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
I say of You, Lord:
You are my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.
Surely You deliver me from hidden traps and from every destructive danger.
You cover me with Your feathers, and under Your wings I take refuge.
Your truth is my shield and my protection.
I will not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor of the dangers that come during the day.
I will not fear disease, destruction, or disaster.
Though a thousand may fall at my side
and ten thousand at my right hand,
it will not come near me.
Because I have made You, Lord, my refuge—
the Most High, my dwelling place—
no evil will overcome me,
and no plague will come near my home.
You give Your angels charge over me,
to guard me in all my ways.
They lift me up in their hands so that I will not stumble.
Because I set my love upon You, Lord,
You deliver me and protect me because I know Your name.
When I call upon You, You answer me.
You are with me in trouble.
You rescue me and honor me.
With long life You satisfy me,
and You show me Your salvation.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen. 🙏
